The Gateway Golden Eagles are golden no more.
Although we have not seen a formal announcement from the school’s staff or the Lee County School District, the Gateway Sun has learned that the mascot name for the new high school being built along Griffin Drive will change from the Golden Eagles to the Eagles.
A person familiar with the situation told the Sun that Naples High School “complained” about the chosen name, as their school teams are called the Naples Golden Eagles.
But the Sun was told over a month ago that “complained” is too soft a word and that athletic officials from that school blew a gasket.
For that reason, the new school’s mascot name was changed to the Gateway Eagles.
The school’s colors will remain black and gold, still closely resembling the color scheme of the New Orleans Saints.
Construction of the 2000-seat school is well underway with at least one of the walls now in place. The building is scheduled to open for the 2021-22 school year.
