The Gateway Soccer Association and Gateway Flag Football League have both voiced their formal support for the re-elections of Vice-Chairman Bill Guy and Supervisor Doug Banks.
Guy is running for Seat 4 on the Gateway District’s Board of Supervisors, while Banks is running for Seat 5. Although there has been some confusion, Guy and Banks are not running against each other. They are running for different seats on the same board.
The statements of support from the GSA and GFFL are hardly a surprise since Guy and Banks have a proven track record of supporting youth sports in Gateway. Banks used to volunteer with the GFFL as a coach.
In contrast, their challengers have made statements that would negatively impact youth sports in Gateway, including a threat to slap a $50 charge on some families – which would effectively kill the leagues.
An NBC-2 report from last year detailed how the fields at the Gateway District’s soccer complex are already the most expensive public fields to rent in Lee County. The election challengers to Guy and Banks have made statements indicating they would increase costs on the leagues and parents even further.
Here is the full statement from the leagues, with the introductory sentence combined by the Gateway Sun:
Hello Gateway Flag Football Families/Gateway Soccer Families,
We wanted to pass on some information that is important to the continued success of Gateway Flag Football and the ongoing use of the Gateway fields. The Gateway leagues and the Gateway fields are managed by the Gateway Community District. They own the fields and are responsible for the ongoing maintenance and upkeep. Gateway Flag Football along with the other leagues lease the fields from Gateway Community District to provide our programs so your children have a place to play, learn and have fun. The Gateway Community District is governed by 5 Board Supervisors and their staff. These supervisors make the decisions regarding how the leagues use the fields and how much we lease them for. The 5 supervisors are elected by Gateway Residents and serve a 4-year term.
For those parents that live in Gateway Community, this year is an election year for 2 of the supervisor seats (Doug Banks – SEAT 5 and Bill Guy – SEAT 4). It is important that we have supervisors that support the leagues and support youth programs in Gateway Community. We are asking that you support the 2 existing Board Supervisors that are running for re-election and VOTE on November 6th for Doug Banks (SEAT 5) and Bill Guy (SEAT 4). Both have been supporters of Gateway Flag Football and the other youth leagues and have openly stated the importance of these programs for the local community.
“Educating and supporting our youth is the best way to invest in a prosperous future” J.A. The Sherman Sport Complex is an amenity that we need to preserve. Families and kids deserve a place that they can thrive and enjoy sporting activities. – Supervisor Bill Guy
