The Gateway Sun has learned that the Florida Department of Transportation will be closing Griffin Drive at SR-82 in September as part of the road widening project. From what we’ve heard the time frame for the expected closure is 4 to 5 weeks.
The exact date in September has not been decided yet, according to an FDOT spokesperson.
Oh but wait, I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet.
When Griffin Drive is all done, they’re going to do the same thing at Gateway Boulevard and SR-82, closing that intersection “possibly in October or November.”
As you have no doubt noticed, the construction crews have closed pretty much every intersection on the northern side of SR-82, leading in and out of Lehigh Acres, for weeks on end. But I guess it never occurred to us that they would need to do the same thing to the south side of SR-82, which services traffic to and from Gateway.
Well, as it turns out, they will need to do just that.
How these closures will affect the traffic situation in Gateway is yet to be seen, but it’s pretty safe to say it won’t be good.
