On March 1 at 3pm, the Construction Advisory Committee of the Lee County School District will be visiting the potential new Gateway High School site on Griffin Road just south of SR-82.

The site visit is part of the process for the school district to make a decision on whether or not to build its next high school in Gateway. The LCSD has previously announced that its next high school would be built in the district’s “East Zone”, where Gateway is located.

Dozens of Gateway parents have committed being there in person to greet the Construction Advisory Committee when they arrive, with many of them planning on taking their children out of school to attend – both to impress upon the CAC that a new school in Gateway crucial for their family, and to teach their kids a civics lesson about getting involved with important causes.

A petition in support of the proposed high school has reached 774 signatures and a fundraising effort to purchase t-shirts for March 1 blew past the original $600 goal in just a few days.

If you’re on Facebook, a special group has been set up to help share information, which is located at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/718393188323114/

It is not necessary to RSVP to attend the March 1 rally, and the group is encouraging as many people to show up as possible.

Community support (or lack thereof) played a major role in the LCSD’s efforts to select a location for the district’s high school in Bonita Springs last year. If you want a public high school option in Gateway, it’s important to let the district know they’d be welcome.

So far the only resistance in Gateway has been from those concerned about traffic on Griffin Drive, and the need for a traffic light at the corner of Griffin and SR-82. The latter has already been resolved with the Florida Department of Transportation announcing a light was coming to that intersection as part of its improvements to SR-82.

However, the community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive in support of a new school for the community.

If you cannot attend the March 1 rally and would still like to voice your support for the proposed Gateway High School, you can sign the petition at: https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/in-support-of-building-a-new-high-school-in

Those who are planning on attending the rally are encouraged to arrive by 2:45pm.
