It seems that Gateway won’t have to worry too much about Hurricane Matthew, but GSCDD board candidate Kathleen Flaherty may need watch out for Hurricane Carol.
Earlier in the campaign season I asked for, and received, an audience with Flaherty’s opponent Carol Stanley.
I arrived at the Stanley home and the first thing I saw was a stack of documents, which were positioned perfectly for me to see.
Oh silly me!, said Stanley, did I happen leave all those campaign donation checks and letters of support just sitting there for you to accidentally see? Oops! Tee hee!
I paraphrased that last paragraph, hence the lack of quotation marks. Because I don’t remember exactly what she said.
But I do remember quite vividly what Stanley said as I was leaving.
We were discussing Flaherty’s last-minute filing to run against Stanley, and Stanley blurted out: “I hate her! Don’t print that.”
Stanley then explained that for months she just assumed that nobody would challenge a resident of Pelican Preserve in an election, and she was put off by the fact that Flaherty would challenge her.
Stanley basically felt as though the Seat should be handed to her on a silver platter. She admitted as much, for which I commend her honesty.
But a few seconds later Stanley changed her position and said she was glad to have an opponent. Stanley said her original plan was to waltz in to the board room on November 17 (first GSCDD meeting after the election) and instruct the district staff to get her caught up on what’s happening, however now that she’s operating a campaign Stanley said will be more versed and ready to go on day one.
Assuming she wins.
