ROADS – As you may have noticed, Griffin Drive was under heavy road construction in the past few days. The road crews got things done pretty rapidly, all things considered. The improvements of that section of Griffin Drive are being paid for by developer WCI – which begs the question: if they could get out of paying for the lake repairs, why couldn’t they get out of paying for the road improvements?

FARMER’S MARKET IS BACK – Starting on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, the Farmer’s Market at jetBlue Park will be open from 9am-1pm every Wednesday until March 2016. It will be interesting to see how many non-farmer vendors there are. There’s been a stink made elsewhere in Lee County about farmers markets looking more like flea markets.

GSCDD UNDERSTATING SOCCER FIELD REVENUES? – We’re all about the facts here, as you know. So when the district says that it gets $3,900 per year from the Gateway Flag Football League in field usage fees, we assume it’s accurate. But when we publish that figure and the GFFL contacts us and says “yeah it’s more like $7900” ………. We’ve asked the GSCDD Operations Manager to look in to this, and to see if they’ve perhaps understated the revenue from the Gateway Soccer Association as well.

WINTERFEST A GO – The request by De LaSalle Academy of Fort Myers to utilize part of the Sherman Soccer Complex to host its Winterfest fundraiser on January 30, 2016 was approved. The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to waive the $450 field usage fee.

GATEWAY’S FISCAL ANALYST RESIGNING – In a letter dated September 9, 2015, the GSCDD’s Fiscal Analyst announced she will be resigning her position effective January 31, 2015. She said she wanted to give enough time to find a replacement, and that she was proud of what was accomplished in her four years on the job. We wish her well.

THIS WEEKEND – Boulevard Tavern is hosting their annual Hallowe’en Party tonight! I went last year and it was a great time. Be sure to dress up! DJ Lex starts at 10:00pm, there are drink specials and it appears they’re giving away $1,000 in prizes. Tomorrow is the 33rd Annual “Taste Of The Town” at jetBlue Park from 11am to 5pm. Taste food from dozens of your favorite local restaurants, including Florida Food Runner partner Stevie Tomato’s. Proceeds from the event benefit the Junior League of Fort Myers.

TWO POOL UPDATES – First update: Supervisor Rod Senior’s proposed user fees at the Gateway Commons Pool fell flat with residents and has been scrapped. Upset pool users crammed a recent GSCDD meeting and applauded when the other Supervisors held an impromptu “straw vote” that rejected Senior’s idea. Chairman William Guy, Vice Chairman Margaret Fineberg and Supervisor Pamela Gill voted against adding user fees. Supervisor Neubauer did not participate in the vote due to a lack of available information. Second update: At the next CDD meeting the residents will be given an update regarding the possibility of using solar power to heat the pool. Between solar and a previous geothermal proposal, it seems there are options that will save the residents money long term over the current propane heating system.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST – The first candidate for the 2016 GSCDD Board of Supervisors elections has emerged. Check on Monday for details.
