Local restaurant icon Sal Basile was joined by his wife Rose and their son Alex in Gateway yesterday to participate in a ground-breaking ceremony for their new commercial building that will house their newest restaurant creation, tentatively named Meatballs Italian Kitchen.

The 5,700 square foot building will be located at the corner of Gateway Boulevard and Commerce Lakes Drive and will contain the restaurant as well as retail space for three other commercial tenants.

Just before the ceremonial shovels hit the ground, Sal Basile told the gathered crowd how excited he was to build a new restaurant in Gateway, and how proud he was to be building something for his family’s future.

Lee County Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass was on hand to participate in the ceremony.

Small businesses serve as a great asset to our community and the Basile family has been instrumental in continuing that trend here in Lee County. I look forward to their success in this new location in Gateway,” said Pendergrass.

Alex Basile said that the building should be completed by August.

The Basile family also owns and operates the popular Two Meatballs in the Kitchen restaurant in Fort Myers.

Meatballs Italian Kitchen will employ 35 people in Gateway, and it will be located at 12401 Commerce Lakes Drive.
