For years the residents of Eagle Pointe have been complaining that while some people play basketball at the Gateway Fun Park, other individuals are drinking beers and selling drugs.

There is also some concern that the people consuming alcohol and drugs aren’t even from Gateway, but rather are visiting from Lehigh Acres and other communities. The reality is likely that it’s a mixture of residents and non-residents of Gateway who are up to no good.

Supervisor Gary Neubauer reached out to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office to alert them of the concerns about drugs and alcohol, and Lieutenant Chris Lalor said that he “will ask the shift Sergeants to have the troops beef up patrols during the requested days and times.”

It can’t hurt.

We all understand that Gateway has far fewer problems when compared to the rest of Lee County. But if the LCSO is going to be driving past the Fun Park on patrol anyway, they may as well stop in and check things out while they’re there.

And now, according to Lieutenant Lalor, that’s exactly what LCSO deputies will be doing.
